Academic Values in the Greek Community 

Modern fraternities began as literary societies. Phi Beta Kappa was the first Greek-letter fraternity, and its members created it in order to discuss their class lectures and political issues of the day. Although these "literary societies" are decidedly more social in modern times, academics remain an important aspect of fraternity and sorority life. 

Fraternities and sororities play an vital role in the academic success of their members. They can help make the academic transition from high school to college easier, in addition to supporting the improvement of current members' academics. 

Student who join fraternities and sororities have access to many resources for the promotion of academic excellence. The wide range of majors or specific organization academic focus insures members will always have someone to help with their studies. Chapters have GPA requirements to maintain good standing with the chapter and members that fall below the requirement are put on academic improvement plans to help them better access resources on campus or refocus on their studies. They may also offer tutoring programs, study files, and group study tables at the library. Housed chapters provide internet access, printers, photocopiers, and designated study areas and quiet hours for members’ use,. 

The Greek community at OSU recognizes that academic achievement is the most important aspect of college life, and the academic goal of each chapter is to be above the All Men's or All Women's Average.
